About Us

Paving a Path Forward Through Research and Innovation

The University of California, Irvine Department of Urology is recruiting current students and recent graduates for available research internships within the department of Urology. Our department boasts a robust research program, containing over 50 distinct projects at any given time, ranging from novel technological engineering to clinical medicinal trials.

Throughout this internship, students work hand in hand with prominent urologists, are allowed operating room observation privileges, clinical patient interaction opportunities, and coveted laboratory experience with both animal and cadaver models. In addition to this, students will extensively practice scientific writing skills by assisting in writing abstracts, protocols, and eventually manuscripts. Opportunities to publish to acclaimed journals and to present at national and local conferences are granted based on quality of work and time spent on projects.

In light of COVID-19, safety precautions must be adhered to including daily screenings and the use of proper PPE, however, students are admitted to hospital premises to conduct clinical research during this time.

Meet Our Urologists

Together, our team in Orange County, CA represents more experience in treating individuals suffering from kidney stones than any other institution on the West Coast.

Dr. Ralph V. Clayman, MD

Dean Emeritus, Former Chair of Urology, Professor

Dr. Clayman is world renowned for his expertise in minimally invasive surgery for kidney stone disease, kidney cancer and strictures of the ureter, and is listed among the Best Doctors in America® for Urology. He is a graduate of Grinnell College and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Following general surgery and Urology training at the University of Minnesota, he spent two years at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas pursuing his interests in renal cancer research, kidney stone disease and minimally invasive Urology. Subsequently, Dr. Clayman spent 17 years at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, rising to the rank of Professor of Urology and Radiology, Director of the Midwest Stone Institute and the inaugural Co-director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery.

In 1990, Clayman and his associates performed the world's first laparoscopic removal of a kidney for a tumor, as well as the first laparoscopic removal of a kidney and ureter to treat cancer. They also developed a cutting balloon catheter to treat obstruction of the ureter and performed pioneering work on percutaneous and endoscopic therapy for ureteral and kidney stones. He established the nation's first fellowship program in minimally invasive urology in 1984; trainees of his program now occupy academic positions at universities throughout the United States, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Canada and Israel. Clayman is the author of textbooks on laparoscopic and percutaneous urologic surgery, and has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He is co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Endourology and has 14 minimally invasive surgical instrumentation patents to his name. He has received numerous national and international awards.

In January 2002, he joined UC Irvine's School of Medicine as Chair and Professor of the newly formed Department of Urology. During his seven years as Chair, the UC Irvine Medical Center's Urology Program came to be ranked among the top 20 programs in the country by US News and World Report. In 2009, Dr. Clayman stepped down as Chair of Urology to become Dean of the School of Medicine. After a successful 5 year term as Dean, he elected to return to the Department of Urology as a Professor. He currently is fully immersed in his clinical and research work in kidney stones, ureteral and renal obstruction, and renal cancer, while enjoying the opportunity to work closely with residents, fellows, and students.

Dr. Jaime Landman, MD

Urology Department Chair and Professor

Dr. Jaime Landman has served as the chair of the Department of Urology since January 2011. He brings to UC Irvine Medical Center highly valued expertise from his former position as the director of minimally invasive urology in the Department of Urology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Dr. Landman has extensive clinical expertise in laparoscopic and endoscopic kidney surgery for the management of urinary tract pathology including kidney stones, kidney cancer and ureteropelvic junction obstruction. He has pioneered technologies and techniques for minimally invasive management of kidney stones and kidney tumors and has developed novel techniques that are used globally for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Dr. Landman is respected as an international expert in the management of kidney cancer and is a pioneer and recognized expert on the application of minimally invasive techniques for ablation of kidney cancer. Dr. Landman has helped re-define the diagnosis of kidney cancer by developing novel diagnostic biopsy techniques which has provided patients more precise treatment of their disease. He directs the course on management of small renal tumors at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association as well as the small renal mass mini-fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Landman developed and tested novel ablation devices, which are currently used for minimally invasive ablation of renal tumors and malignancies. He has also invented novel technologies for the diagnosis of kidney cancer. His research focuses on stone disease, and he pioneered the combined antegrade and retrograde approach for treatment of complex kidney stones. Working in collaboration with basic scientist, he is actively working on tumor markers for urologic cancers and is trying to identify the relationship between kidney cancer and surrounding tissues.

Dr.-Roshan-Patel-Image.jpg

Dr. Roshan M. Patel, MD

Assistant Professor of Clinical Urology,
Director, Kidney Stone Center,
Chief, Division of Endourology

Dr. Roshan Patel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago where he earned a BA in Economics and Biological Sciences. Next, he completed his MS in Biotechnology at the Johns Hopkins University. Thereafter, he earned his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Patel went on to complete an internship in General Surgery and residency in Urology at the Boston University Medical Center.

An innovative urologist and surgeon, Dr. Patel’s research interests include outcomes based studies on minimally invasive surgery for kidney cancer. Additionally, he has a strong focus in evaluating the methodology used in percutaneous surgery for large kidney stones with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Lastly, he actively leads projects in the endourology lab in evaluating new technology that may change the way surgery is practiced today.

Dr. Patel joined the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine in 2016 as a fellow in Endourology under the mentorship of Dr. Ralph Clayman and Dr. Jamie Landman. His clinical practice emphasizes all aspects of minimally invasive Urology including robotic, laparoscopic, percutaneous, ureteroscopic and needle ablative surgeries.
